The Sox Rule at the Myrtle Beach of the West!

We’ve had a number of people tell us that we need to visit Bandon Dunes to hang out and play some golf.  Bandon Dunes is a phenomenal golf resort with a handful of different courses located just about 2 miles to the north of the quaint little town of Bandon.  A good portion of the resort is located immediately adjacent to the coast, so it’s beautiful in that regard alone, let alone that it has 4 championship golf courses, great lodging, and several restaurants on-property.

We snagged a campsite at Bullard Beach State Park, which turned out to be located between town and the resort, so the location couldn’t have been better.  Actually, we could have walked up the beach and entered the resort from the dunes had we known it was so close.img_6874img_7326img_7329

Anyway, we spent a couple nights in this cool little resort town, and although the weather wasn’t great, we managed to watch our Red Sox play in Games 4 and 5 of the World Series against the Dodgers.  The first night we had a pizza and a few beers at the local brewery, Bandon Brewing Company, as we watched our Saaaawx stage a great come-from-behind win to go up 3-1 in the series.  And although that was cool in of itself, the better part is that most of the people in the pub watching the game were Dodgers fans.  We did our best to rub it in a bit, but we did that cautiously so that we could escape the town without being beat up.  Most Boston sports fans have some difficulty with “harassment in moderation”, but we managed to keep things fairly positive and respectful.img_7332

Back to Bandon Dunes, our good friend, Dinty Moore, thought that he might be able to get us on the golf course for free, but that didn’t work out in our favor.  No worries, Dinty, thanks for giving it a try…we certainly appreciate the effort.  Considering that the greens fees are $290 per person, it would have been a great deal for these “adventure seekers on a budget”.  As a side note, we visited the resort on our second day just to check it out, and we struck up a conversation with the bar and restaurant manager in the clubhouse, along with the bartender and one of the waiters.  The waiter gave us the top-secret suggestion that the par 3 course and range facility were open to the public and were both free of charge.  Huh?  Did you say free golf?  We hauled ass back to the campsite, grabbed our clubs, and went back to the range and played 9 holes on the par 3.  It was quick and perfect fix for our (my) golf craving.img_6879img_733456246511518__1e1a7855-8871-40d1-b4bc-d4a14463faf8img_6877

After we finished our free round of golf, we stopped at the restaurant and had dinner while we watched Game 5.  It was perfect because the guy that told us about the free golf actually waited on us, and he was super cool as we slung beers and ate fish and chips.  The pub was full of testosterone, as one would expect, and with the exception of just 3 or 4 guys, all were Dodger fans.  MJ got a little loud a few times, but everyone was good-natured as we watched our Sox coast to another world championship.  It was a great day, and an awesome evening, and we were fortunate to be on this beautiful property as we tasted yet another Boston victory.  Pisssssa!  That’s what we screamed when the final out was made.  Like I said before, wining never gets old.  Before we checked out of Bandon the next day, we grabbed a crab sandwich and some fish tacos down on the pier, a nice treat to satisfy our craving for fresh seafood.  The short story is that we really enjoyed Bandon and we look forward to visiting again sometime soon.  Four right!!!!!! img_6880-1
