After we left Whitefish, we spent a quick night along the North Fork of the Flathead River, about 25 miles north of town and about 25 miles closer to Glacier NP.  We eyeballed this free site in our travels a few days before, and we were determined to return.  The North Fork is a magnificent river…turquoise blue and crystal clear.  To say that it looks fishy would be an understatement.  Anyway, I gave it a good beating on the evening we arrived, fishing both on the surface and below.  I managed to dredge out a couple more Whitefish on a nymph rig, but the cutties were nowhere to be found.  The ban on campfires was finally lifted the day before we arrived, so we were stoked to warm up our bones around a blazing fire that night.  What a great night for stargazing and for hearing nothing other than the beautiful river.  We were greeted with a 34-degree temperature in the morning, the coldest night we had seen in a while.  But that didn’t last long as the sun rose above the ridge behind us.  I need to find some real trout…
