What a cool little town in Southeastern BC!  Lots of mountain bike trails, a cool little city center, an impressive ski hill, a beautiful river (Elk River), and a very hip brewery.  What else could one ask?  We spent only one night in this sleepy little town at the Mt. Fernie Provincial Park, but have put it on our list of places to spend more time.  We could feel the pressure of the upcoming Labor Day weekend, and wanted to get to our next destination (Whitefish) sooner than later to secure a camp spot.   We did manage to slug down a few beers at the Fernie Brewing Company the night we arrived, and we snuck out for quick leg-stretcher on the bikes the morning we departed.  The cool thing about Fernie is that there are bike trails everywhere, and the Provincial Park was no exception.  We simply connected to the trailhead right inside the park and found our way to a trail called “Lazy Lizard”.  This trail, which connects to the Island Lake Lodge, was one of the most enjoyable and unexpected rides we have done in some time.  Very well marked with a nice mixture of uphill, berms, bridges, and downhill.  And, very singlespeed-friendly for the old guy in denial.  We did a very fast, 5-mile out-and-back, grabbed a much-needed hot shower, and sprayed gravel out of the campground right after our 11AM checkout.  Fernie, can we see each other again sometime?  We hope so…
