After stocking up on beer at Barbarian, and spending a quick overnight along the Payette River, we arrived in McCall, Idaho on Tuesday, August 14. McCall is a sleepy little mountain/lake town located about 2.5 hours north of Boise, and it’s been one of our favorite places for at least a couple years. It has an awesome lake and a local ski hill (Brundage Mountain) along with plenty of recreational opportunities (paddleboarding, golf, mountain biking, fishing, etc.). It also has 3 breweries and even a great sushi restaurant that is at least on par with the Park City eateries. We also love the camping at Ponderosa State Park located right on the lake. Town is only a short bike ride away, and there are legitimate single track trails located right inside the park. We spent 3 nights at the park and even treated ourselves to one night at the Shore Lodge, including dinner, thanks to Joe for the hookup! We snuck in 9 holes of golf at the McCall Golf Club (outrageously cheap, $41 for two, including cart), and we even hung around for Steak Thursday with all the rambunctious locals (full sirloin steak dinner for $16.50 pp!). Great value for our senior budget! We broke a sweat on the Huckleberry Trail in order to offset the beers we had at the Broken Horn Brewery on the south end of town. Bre, this place is the real deal…great hoppy beers, very nice setting, and excellent popcorn. We hauled ass out of McCall on Friday before the swarms of “tourists” arrived from the big city of Boise…
